Pool Safety Is Important To Consider!

On a hot day, there's nothing more inviting to a child than a cool, blue pool. But even if a child can swim, pool safety isn't a given. There are lots of pool safety tips that can help you keep your kids, visitors... and anyone who uses your pool safe.

Pool safety is no joke

When you get a pool, you also need certain things to prevent accidents and things to help in the event of an accident. One of the best ways to prevent accidents is to install a pool fence around the perimeter of the pool with a locked gate. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, "the fence should prevent a child from getting over under or through to gain access the the pool." That way small children cannot get to the pool and intruders who want to take a swim can't get in. Most of today's pool fences are made of a transparent mesh material that kids can't climb.

You can even go so far as to install an alarm that will alert you when someone is in the pool area when they shouldn't be. (This can include your children or uninvited guests, and it can also be used as a home safety device.) Here are some other pool safety tips:

Never leave your children alone near the pool.
Add a power safety cover to the pool. Not only will it keep children out of the pool, but it will keep leaves and bugs out as well, which is just an extra added bonus.
Learn CPR in case you need to rescue a child.
Keep life-saving devices on hand such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver. Also, keep a phone nearby in case you have to call 911. That could be a vital pool safety product.
Remove all pool toys when kids are done swimming so they don't try to reach for them.
Lock the pool gate when everyone is done swimming for the day.

Examples of pool safety and following the rules

When you have a pool, you need to be sure that everyone understands the pool rules. Put up a sign posting these rules, and explain they're pool safety rules to keep everyone safe while swimming.

Don't let kids run around the pool. They could slip on a wet spot, fall and hurt themselves.
Don't let anyone dive in shallow areas.
Keep glass out of the pool area.
Make sure the pool depths are clearly marked.
Make sure the area around the pool is treated with slip-resistant material.
