An Expensive But Necessary Coverage Is Flood Insurance

If you need a reason to get interested in a page of content pertaining to flood insurance, just flip on your TV and check out one of the news stations. They will be talking about hurricanes and the flooding and damage they caused the U.S. last year soon enough. It is still not present in people's minds, though, unless they have personally been affected. The fact of the matter is that when people think of hurricanes, they think of winds and power outages and debris and massive damage. What they do not think about -- or at least didn't before hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans last year -- is the flooding.

You can't stop the dam from breaking, or keep your house from taking on water. The forces are just too great. But you can cover yourself financially with adequate and comprehensive flood insurance, so you can afford to rebuild.

One of the most prevalent hurricane safety tips we can offer you is to make sure your insurance policies cover what you need protected TO THE LETTER and that you do not leave yourself without adequate cash reserves in the meantime.
As much as you can, stash money away in accounts you can access in the aftermath of a storm. You might not think about this as being an important safety measure, but many people around the Gulf Coast wish they had done so.
As for as more literal weather safety advice goes, you can make sure when you buy your next home that it's not in a flood zone, or that its shutters and structure are sound enough to withstand at least strong winds, if not catastrophic ones.

Again, you can't worry about hurricanes that much because you will not be able to stop them. But you can worry about how you will respond financially, and that means flood insurance. Think about it.
