The garage is probably the most dangerous room in your house. Think about it, you have sharp objects to take care of the yard, all sorts of tools and all sorts of chemicals from gas and oil to lawn chemicals and bug sprays and more. Because of that, you should keep some garage safety measures in mind, especially if you have little ones. It doesn't have to be a big job--nothing a little garage organization can't fix anyway.

What to Know About Garage Safety

There are so many things to know about garage safety that we don't know where to start. Why not start with the garage door? Most garage door openers these days come with some sort of motion or object detector so that the door doesn't close on something or someone. If yours doesn't have that feature, you should have it added or get an opener that does have it. Here are some more garage safety tips:

Garage Safety Tip #1: Keep all tools locked in a cabinet.

Garage Safety Tip #2: Keep kids toys and bikes in an area of the garage that's nowhere near tools and lawn and garden equipment.

Garage Safety Tip #3: Keep all chemicals on a high shelf where kids can't reach or in a locked cabinet. Garage fumes can be very dangerous.

Garage Safety Tip #4: Clean up any grease or chemical spills so nobody slips and falls.

Garage Safety Tip #4: Make sure your garage is well-lit so nobody trips and falls on something dangerous in the dark.

Garage Safety Tip #5: Store rakes, shovels, etc. by hanging them on the wall.

Garage Safety Tip #6: Remember the rules of fire safety. Your garage should not be exempt from having fire safety products like a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher.

Garage Safety Tip #7: Don't put your BBQ grill back in the garage (if that's where you store it) while it's hot. In addition, never light your grill inside the garage.
