Most of us read up on child rearing before we even give birth to our first child. For the first one, we tend to be overcautious and make all kinds of purchases that we will never use (as well as a few that we would not have been able to live without). We read every child safety tip that we come across and pay close attention to the little old ladies when they are nosy enough to pass a child safety tip along to us. After we are around our children so much we sometimes get the feeling like they could handle more than they really can.
